I think that the process of gaining a language and being able to use it to communicate is quite fascinating. For a long time now, I have wanted to be involved in this process as a teacher.
Since there is such a high demand and need for English in the world, I have become an ESL teacher.
I think that what I do is special because I help people be able to reach their goals. Some people might say "what about your goals?" But, this kind of work IS my goal.
I suppose that I contribute to the improvement of society in an indirect way, but it is an important way. If more people are able to use English to do their jobs better, or live better, or know more, I am contributing to the quality of life of many people. Besides, learning a second language can be fun. It's a great way to keep your mind fresh and active, and to go on through life developing, evolving, and fulfilling yourself.
I like the fact that I don't have to just sit in one spot, I go around to many different places, I am exposed to variety; I think it's great. Of course on the other hand, I have to do a lot of planning, correcting, creating, and reflecting--which is all time consuming. I suppose that's why being a teacher is considered a kind of vocation and not just a job. What about you? Do feel a vocation for you chosen profession?
